Chevron
Streamlining corporate sustainability research

7x faster research
Allowed researchers to scan full reports in just 35 minutes
95% accuracy
Summarized company emission details with high accuracy
Increased efficiency
Centralized and accelerated sustainability research
Context
Chevron is an energy corporation specializing in oil and gas. Their purpose is to develop affordable, reliable, cleaner energy that enables human progress.
Our goal was to create a web scraping tool for the Renewable Energy Group at Chevron to gather data about other company's efforts towards adopting sustainable energy.
Impact
We successfully created a tool that gathers and reports corporate sustainability data, resulting in researchers being able to find data 7x faster and with 95% accuracy.

Challenge
Currently, Chevron gathers sustainability data by manually searching for each company's annual sustainability report and reading through it. This process takes hours on end and makes it difficult to organize and keep track of data.
Goal
Build a tool that searches for an inputted company's sustainability reports, collects the data with web scraping, and visualizes that data with AI-generated summaries.
Wireframes
We aimed to find a way to visualize a large amount of data in a way that is easily readable and met our client's needs.

Final Design
Search
Search any company name to collect data on their sustainability efforts.

Dashboard
Displays a company's data — including the company’s overall sustainability score, individual metrics, a summary, and target emission goals. Users have the ability to save dashboards for future reference and export the entire dashboard as a PDF.

Saved Reports
Compare multiple companies side-by-side. Sort and filter data metrics.

Company Comparison
Visualizes the seven sustainability metrics Chevron uses to assess potential partners.

Takeaways
01
Understanding user needs
This project was built for a very specific user base. It was crucial that I understood our client's workflow, needs, and pain points. Through in-depth client conversations, our team built a tool centered around our user's needs.
02
Visualizing complex data
I had to consider how to visualize complex data effectively and gracefully, balancing hard data with visual design. I designed simple interfaces to communicate complex data reports.
03
Iterate, iterate, and iterate again
I designed multiple iterations throughout this project, altering my designs to adapt and fit the client's feedback and developing needs.
